Final Draft!!

1.) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

This is the first scene of the movie, it shows blood dripping into a sink, along the with the title "Starring Georgina Nicholas". In this scene I tried to make the audience feel a bit suspicious about this and wander how it could be linked to anything and hows blood it is. Instantly there is a bit of horror/thriller in the movie, the dark blood dripping down into the sink.

This scene shows the title of my film (The Other Side). I was advised to use a simple form of text as so I did. I named my movie The Other Side because the story basically explains that a teenager has a split personality and that one side of that split personality is a killer so he murders one of his friends, only then the next morning realising that he is suddenly the killer, hence the blood dripping at certain points in the movie.

This is a camera shot through the killers eyes, so you can see what the killer is seeing and this is used quite alot in horror movies to get you into the mind set of the killer/monster of the movie. I think that this is a good angle as you get to see what the killer is seeing. And it later zooms in so close that you are right behind the victim.

This is a very close up view of the victims eye, I did this shot because I thought it gave a great view of how scared and horrified the victim is.

This scene shows the killer pointing a gun at the victim, you cant see very clearly but he is wearing a black mask and a black hoodie to hide his face and give a more menacing and scary look to him. Notice how I put the camera at a low angle to show how he is the more powerful being, but it also shows as if the camera is the victims eyes and the audience is seeing what the victim is seeing.

This is the bit where the teenager wakes up and doesnt yet realise that he is the killer. It is a normal bedroom with normal clothing so that could be related to the target audience.

This is one mirror scene where by he is tired as he has just woken up and is looking himself in the mirror. I decided to instead of a normal face on angle I wanted to make sure the camera can have an over the shouder shot so it can also look as if someone is over his shoulder looking at him.

This is a shot of the tap with water flowing from it, after the teenager puts his head downwards out of view from the mirror it cuts to this shot to show that he is cleaning his face.

This is the final scene of the movie, where the teenager comes back up from washing his face and comes back up as the killer, this is the indication and give away that he is the killer who murdered his friend.. the other side of his personality.

Overall I feel I stuck with conventions because this helped me structure my film and make it more relevant and characterised towards the horror genre. By sticking to conventions enabled the audience to also relate my movie to the genre genre and therefore not mislead them towards a crime/thriller genre or any other similiar genre. One of the key main conventions would be the vulnerable teenage girl who in most films such as "Scream", where the teenage girl is usually one of the first victims of the movie. Another key feature is the masked killer, of which the audience wander throughout the whole movie who it is and will there be a twist at the end of the story. One of the main conventions I wanted to put in my film was the favourable young vunerable teen of which in many horror movies gets hurt or killed at some point during a horror/ thriller movie. This is what I wanted to incorporate into my film as it is not only a key conventions in horror movies but also it relates specifically to my target audience as most of them would be teenagers and therefore to a certain extent they can relate to the character.

2.)How does my media product represent particular social groups?

The girl who is starring in my movie is an average girl and is living a normal teenagers life. But as in most movies, all of that changes and in one event her life changes...

Shia LaBeouf (Sam) - The Transformers movies:

Sam a teenager involved in a war between the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons, two factions of alien robots who can disguise themselves by transforming into everyday machinery. Sam buys his first car with his dad and later finds out his car is a robotic alien. Sam then is brought into this battle between two intergalatic robotic aliens. This shows how a normal teenagers life can be changed very suddenly.

Slumdog Millionaire:

Mumbai in 2006, eighteen-year-old Jamal Malik (Dev Patel), a former street child from the Juhu slum, is a contestant on the Indian version of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, and is one question away from the grand prize. However, before the 20,000,000 question, he is detained and interrogated by the police, who suspect him of cheating because of the unlikelihood that a simple "slumdog" could possibly know all the answers. Jamal recounts, through flashbacks, the incidents in his life which provided him with each answer. This may be classed as a fairly extreme case of how an average teenagers life can change drastically but the point is still there.

Alex Rider Stormbreaker:

This movie is based on the Alex Rider series and this is the first book of the series and the only to have become a movie. The basic plot is that Alex Rider who is a fourteen year-old orphan and lives with his uncle Ian Rider (Ewan McGregor) who is supposedly a bank manager and is often away from home. One day Alex is told that his uncle has died in a car crash. Alex subsequently discovers that Ian Rider was in fact a spy working for MI6 and that he was killed by famed assassin. Again this how drastically a characters or persons life can change around. And this is one of the points of my story and also the point I am trying to put across may make it easier for people to understand my story a bit better after reading the background story aswell.

All three of these movies are prime examples of how my media product represents a particular social group, in this case it is the teenagers, which are primarly between the ages of 13 - 19 years of age. Again each of these movies contains a normal teenager's life and who's world is dramatically changed by one event or discovery. This in a way could pass a "message" over that not every teenager is the same and that they are different, in terms of different events that they have encountered in their lives, most of which I doubt are quite as drastic as the ones shown in any of the movies shown.

However they are some movies that represent the youthful population in a negative way such as the 2010 film "Shank" which portrays the stuggle of living life in the year 2015 when gangs have taken over London and the struggle to find food or known as "munchies" in the film. This film in my opinion shows a negative yet positive representation to the teenage population because there are scenes of violence, swearing, abuse and many gang related activites. Also while filming at the Heygate Estate in Walworth, South London during September 2009, neighbours complained about the film's violent depiction of gangs, turf wars and stabbings. However on the other hand there is the storyline, which shows the struggle for a a young teenager to avenge his brothers death and determination to do so. And this in my view shows the positive impact that a teenager can have and one of the characteristics of which they have and can be a valuable assest in the world.

Shank:

Female Representation:

In most genre movies, there are several cases where the woman/ female teenager is one of the first victims of the killer/ monster. This is shown primarily in my video as it shows a woman who is clearly vulnerable and that is taken advantage of during the video. However, this is a very sterotypical view in horror movies and in shown in film such as "Scream" and "Final Destination". In my video I have shown the males to more overpowering than woman as it is later discovered that the killer is a male and this is shown through acts such as throwing her down to the ground and camera angles such as putting the camera in a lower position and facing up towards the killer to show his dominance and position in that particular scene.

In general I have represented teens as both victims of society and also a way of dominating society. Unfortunaly teenagers in general are now obtaining bad reputations due to knife and gun crimes and this can to a certain degree be shown in my films aswell as film such as "Demons Never Die".

3.) What kind of institution might distribute your media product and why?

A film distributor is a company or individual responsible for releasing films to the public either theatrically or for home viewing. There are many types of distrubuters in the movie industry and each of them usually distribute one particular genre or sometimes a few different types of genres and stay with only distributing those types of movies. Some of the most well known distributers known globally includes, Warner Bro's, 20th Century Fox, Lions Gate Entertainment and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc.:

New Line Cinema:

20th Century Fox:

The company I would chose to distribute my film would be New Line Cinema which is an American film studio. It was founded in 1967 by Robert Shaye and Michael Lynne as a film distributor, later becoming an independent film studio. It has also distributed some of the classic horror films such as "The Chainsaw Massacre (sequence), Nightmare On Elm Street, Final Destination (sequence)" and also " Se7en".

New Line Cinema have produced many successful movies aswell as horror movies such as,  A Nightmare on Elm Street was produced and released by New Line in 1984. The franchise was New Line's first commercially successful series after a devastating financial slump, leading the company to be nicknamed "The House that Freddy Built". The low-budget flick had a production cost $1.8M and grossed over $25.5M at the US box office. It was the first film to feature actor Johnny Depp. A year later, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge was released. It grossed $3.3M in the first three days and over $30M at the domestic box office. Nightmare 3 was released in 1987. In its first weekend it grossed more than any previously released independent film and went on to make almost $45M at the US box-office.

New Line Cinema Intro:

4.) Who would be the audience for your media product?

Different genres of movies usually aim for the same age group for example, horror movies aim for the 16-30 years old categorie and genres like comedy may apply for much younger age groups (depending on the content of the movie). My media product would be aimed at mostly 16-24 year olds due to the genre of the movie and conetent but also the legal age limits:

Aswell as my media product being aimed at the 16-24 year olds, it is both aimed at both genders but due to popular belief and statistics, it will be mostly men who I think will see this kind of movie even though girls are still able to watch and enjoy horror films.

5.) How did you attract/ address your audience?

My storyline however isnt different from most horror movies where a psychotic killer murders teens/ young adults and also the possibility of a twist at the end. A prime example of this would be the movie, "Demons Never Die", I have seen this movie and even the trailer is misleading and disceptive and therefore in my opinion makes the movie much more interesting...

This movie inparticular is similiar to my media product due to the masked killer and the young teen victims but as mentioned before the twist at the end is very different. I used young actors for my movie firstly because it was more accessible and easier to organise and also they can interact and relate to the movie as they go through similiar circumstances in terms of relationships and emotions as any teenager does, and movies like "Demons Never Die" and my media product prey on those emotions are therefore gives off more of an impact on the audience.

Different camera angles enabled me to give the characters a different position and stance in a prticular scene. For example when the teenage girl is on the floor, the camera faces up towards the killer which implies that the killer is in more of a dominant position and also gives the effect that the audience are looking through the eyes of the victim and again this is another method to make the audience more involved with the film.

I did not use much sound in my film, I chose two song which contribute greatly to the mise en scene of the film and I used sound effects for the two gun shots within the movie. There was no ambience sound as I thought it would not suit the theme of the movie and would distract people from the music which should trigger the suspense for the audience. Also, with the location of the movie (in a wood) the sounds were not adequate enough and again would in my opinion ruin the tension building. However, the wood is a typical convention of horror movies as it seems to be very dark and mysterious and it seemed a great place to film my video as there were many places to hide the killer and make the victim wander what is actually out there?

The editing was mainly in a linear fashion but was broken up by scenes of blood dripping into the sink. The editing was not particulary done at a fast pace because the music and mise en scene of the movie did not fit with quicky style editing, so I thought it would be more appropiate for longer and more durable clips.

6.) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

During this construction of making this film opening I have learnt a huge amount the subject of media studies and what it involves, the technolgy I have used and also the equipment that has aided my greatly in this creation.

The editing software I used was "Corel VideoStudio", this was the first piece of editing software I have used. However, it was very easy to use and got to grips with it very quickly which enabled me to devleop my understanding and skills for it at a much greater pace and gave more of a chance to explore the different effects and transistions, which aided me in the creation of my media product.

Blogger is another form of technology which has contributed greatly towards my media project as it showed and saved my progress in creating my film opening. It also gave me the oppurtunity to be a bit more creative as it enabled me to personalise my blog and therefore make it more suitbale for me.

Overall I think that I have learnt alot about technologies from the process of constructing this product due to the fact that I have experienced alot of these types of technologies for the first time. I also believe that the technology has enabled me to become slightly more creative and imaginative in terms of what I can achieve via such technology e.g. Corel VideoStudio.

7.) Looking back at your prelimary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progress from it to the full product?

Since my prelimary task, I have learnt alot more and developed alot more in terms of knowledge, understanding and my abilites to work with new kinds of software and they effects it has on my product.

I have learnt many things in the progression from the premlimary task to my full product, such as how research and planning plays such a vital role in creating your product as you need to find your target audience, locations, theme and many other factors which contribute to your product.

However, one of the main things I learnt is the importance of target audience as it provides a "target" and therefore by researching other films of the same target audience you can learn and adopt certain ideas and concepts that are generally in the same genre of movie. The lack of research and planning I feel showed in my prelimary task as it was not set up correctly and the use of the camera and the way it worked was not sufficient enough in order to obtain an adequate product. Due to this I have become much more focused on what I needed to improve on for my final product so I researched camera effects and shots such as the 180 degree rule and low and high angled shots and the effect of which they give to the audience.

180 Degree Rule:

Image of my Target Audience

This is a typical kind of person who would see my film. My film is aimed at the young population, between 17-25. It is more directed towards the male audience but it can also be watched and enjoyed by the females. For my opening there many graphic scenes at all so to a certain extent it could be enjoyable for people who are between 13-19.

This is George Mapp and he is 17 years old and used to attend St. Edmunds College. He is casually dressed and presented with the long black straightened hair and dark blue top. He spends most of the time playing football and going to the gym. He socialises alot with his friends, going to the cinema, clubs, partying and just generally meeting up with friends. He said that he enjoys watching films, his favourite genre is action and comedy movies although he said that he does enjoy some horror/thriller movies. He prefers watching movies in a cinema because of the quality and the atmosphere is better in a cinema rather than home, but he said that his favourite scary movie were the Paranormal Activity movies. He said that they were different to most other movies of that genre because it was done by a hand held camera which gave the "edge" and since it was done by a hand held camera it made it more realistic.

He watches shows like, Family Guy, Eastenders, The Simpsons and Casualty. These are shows a typical teenager would watch.

Distributers

MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) are owned by Sony, are very famous and have distributed many famous films such as Hannibal and The Wizard of Oz. The iconic lion roar makes people recognise it. MGM has a variety in the type of films it has distributed, for example Hannibal is a very famous horror movie which did very well and on the other side of the spectrum there is the Wizard of Oz which is fantasy and nothing close to a horror movie. I am going to keep this distributer in mind and look at other distributers.

New Line Cinema is another famous distributer and has been seen in many famous films such as, Se7en, Austin Powers, The Lord of the Rings, Wedding Crashers and also Blade. I think this is the best distributer for me because it has distributed more thriller/horror films and therefore I think it is ideal for my movie.

20th Centruy Fox is a worldwide known production company, they usually produce movies for the young and youthful. They have produced movies such as The Simpsons movie which came from a series of epidsodes and they decided to make a movie.

Prelimary Task:

This was a form of practice as it gave me the oppurtunity to film from different angles and shots and then how I could use those shots in my film. I also learnt about the 180 degree rule. for example what it is and how not to break it. As it was our first time filming and acting and we found certain parts amusing, which lead to time wasting. Furthermore, we had technical problems as certain parts of the film wouldnt load onto the computer so we had to film a couple more times.

Feedback

For my first draft I was advised to break up my film, by this he meant that I should not tell the story as it was obvious what was going to happen. So I put it scenes which dont really fit in but they break up the movie, but the movie still makes sense. I did this by putting in another scene of blood dripping into the sink.

I got some positive feedback aswell, people in my class liked the ending of the film, where the teenager goes out of view of the camera when facing the mirror and when he comes back up he comes up as the killer. My class also liked the soundtrack of the movie, they said that it gave a good atmosphere to the film and a chilling effect.

I had to do one of the scenes again as the lighting was too poor and it was not clear enough to make out the character. The scene was the one where the hooded/masked killer is walking up to the girl and is about to kill her with the gun. Before I did it again it was hard to make out the killer so I thought it would be best to do it again along with being advised by my teacher.

Programmes and Websites I Used

I've uploaded my video onto youtube so I can get feedback from my classmates and other people who view my film opening. Youtube is a great way to show people what you can do and get yourself noticed, hence their slogan, "Broadcast Yourself". I also expereienced problems originally uploading my video straight from my computer so I uploaded it on youtube first and then put it onto my blog.

Blogger is the website/programme I used to post my ideas and progress throughout the making of my video. The idea of blogger is to put my ideas and thoughts onto it to show my progress and build up to the final product. I was able to upload videos, pictures and text onto it to show my development.

Corel Video Studio was the programme our class used to edit our films. I found it very easy to use and apply/incorporate certain effects into it such as special visual effects and sound effects and titles. However, we could only access the programme from the computers in our media studies classroom as the programme was not installed in any of the other computers in our school., this could be classed as a slight limitation to the process.

This is a website where you can watch the openings of films and also it gives you tipps on how to improve your opening and what to do and what not to do. I did pick up on a few ideas from watching a few openings from the same genre of my film such as effects and a few camera angles.

Keep Vid is the website which allows you to download videos from Youtube using the URL. I used this website to put my distributer into my film (New Line Cinema). It was very simple to use as I use the same method to download music onto my ipod. I was told about this website by a member of my class and sound it very useful in my media project.

Vimeo is the website we used as a class to post our videos onto into a HD format

What I have Learnt from Feedback

I learned that I had to "break up" my movie a little bit. By this I mean that it is to predictable and that the audience can tell what is going to happen. So I put in little bits of film to break up the story a bit. This makes the movie more appealing and interesting and also less obvious to the audience.

Different Openings

The Godfather:

The Godfather is a famous worldwide movie, known all around the world. The opening of it is also very famous and the godfathers very husky weak voice. The opening is very slow and shows the godfather talking to an old friend about trying to kill someone. So in thsi first scene we see how powerful the godfather is. It is a slow opening with not much action at all but it also sets out the rest of the movie.

Blade:

Blade is another famous film which is about, Wesley Snipes plays as "Blade", a human vampire hybrid, who protects humans against vampires. Blade grossed $70 million at the U.S. box office, and $131.2 million worldwide. The opening is very actioned packed and clear, it is very entertaining to watch.

Saving Private Ryan:

Saving Private Ryan is a 1998 American war film set during the invasion of Normady in World War 2. It was directed by Steven Spielberg. The film is notable for the intensity of its opening 27 minutes, which show the Omaha beachhead assault of June 6, 1944. The opening is very graphic as it shows people been shot and killed and alot of scenes of blood and there is also a bit where a soldier is trying to hold his intestines inside him. I personally think this is good because it really depics the reality of war and how terrible it can be.

The programme I used to edit my movie

This programme is "Corel VideoStudio". I have used this software before when I was editing my primilary task and found it fairly easy to use. I able to put in certain effects such as making the film black and white, make it seem like a old movie, shake and other amazing effects which makes the movie have a cutting edge.

Health and Safety Issues After Filming

I did not encounter any problems regarding health and safety in the woods. However I did have to clear an area with twigs and plants with thorns on them, where for one scene my actor had to fall onto (She was not harmed throughout the filming).

Tuesday 29 March 2011

Costumes

The costume that the killer will be wearing will be a black hoodie, grey tracksuit bottoms, black gloves and a black mask. This gives the killer a fairly modern day look and also looks very intimidating.

I have been advised not to use music from artists due to copyright. I have heard from friends and other people in my class that the music from the well known game, Call of Duty Black Ops, that the music they use in their game is very good and would suit my opening scene well.

Background Story of My Film

The background story of my film is that a teenager goes out to hunt down his cousin who framed him for a murder he didnt commit and now he is out for revenge. He finds his cousin and kills her in the local wood with a gun. But then he wakes up completley unaware of what he did, it turns out that he has a split personality and then there will be a cliff hanger, which then leads onto the rest of the story

This is the mask I am going to use in my film but I am going to spray it black and arrange my hoody to show no skin and just the black mask. This gives it a menacing look and also threatning to the viewer.

Saturday 19 March 2011

Sound Effects

This is a very good sound as it is very clear and has the echo which I want to put into my film. This sound is originally from a sniper, but it can be used as a pistol sound instead.

Again this is originally a sniper sound effect but I think it can be used as a pistol. One good thing about this particular sound effect is that it has the shell of the round hitting the ground which is also a very good effect.

Friday 11 March 2011

This is the type of scene I will be shooting in the blood dripping into the sick scene. I will try to put it in slow motion as I think that that kind of motion suits that situation well.

Latest Idea for movie

I have decided to do a opening scene with alot of suspense without much action and is relativley slow. It is going to involve clues to what the main movie is about and encourages the viewer to potentially take a greater interest in the plot of the movie. One idea is the dropping of (fake) blood into a bathroom sink and then some sort of weapon is then cleaned off blood within the sink and again more blood is falling into the sink. Then another idea is quick shots of photos of people then the next quick picture the picture burning. Also, one key bit which is going to be the end of the movie is, a slow motion shot of a white mask and then there is another shot of a man with the mask on, looking directly into the camera.

Types of Shots and Angles

This is a low angle shot of which I am planning to use a couple of times. One time close to the beginning of the movie will shows the victim walking. This is just to diversify the type of shots, and the other time I am going to use it is when the killer is approaching the victim. This gives the image that the killer is bigger, more powerful and more dominant than the victim.

Another shot is one where a boy looks into a mirror bends down and when he looks back up there is a different person. An example would be in the movie Jarhead where a soldier looks in the mirror, looks down and when he comes back up he sees his girlfriend.

Wednesday 9 March 2011

Target Audience

My target audience will be aimed at people who are 15 - 35 years of age. This is because of the type of film it is and what it contains. The minimum is a 15 because firstly the film contains scenes of violence and use of personal weapons so legally it is a 15 but also, I think that most people under the age of 15 would not enjoy it. It can be seen by both male and female, but it is more of a male film as it has the use of personal weapons and not much of a female movie.

Certification

I am thinking of putting in an age certificate in the opening of my film. Professional producers put in these certificates for legal reasons, in order to only let those people who are of that age or higher to see that movie.

Film Directors

William Friedkin:

William Friedkin  was born on August 29th 1935 and is an American film director, producer and screenwriter, best known for directing "The French Connection" in 1971 and "The Exorcist" in 1973.Friedkin followed up with 1973's The Exorcist, based on William Peter Blatty's best-selling novel, which revolutionized the horror genre and is considered by some critics to be one of the greatest horror movies of all time. Friedkin's directorial "ethics" however, came into serious question when filming the now notorious scene where Linda Blair smacks Ellen Burstyn, causing her to fly backwards into a break-away table. Even after warning Friedkin the stuntman was "pulling her too hard," Friendkin prompted him to pull her harder, resulting in a permanent back injury for Burstyn. The Exorcist was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. It won the Best Screenplay Award.

Darren Lynn Bousman:

Darren Lynn Bousman was born on January 11th, 1979 and is an American film director and screenwriter. He is a graduate of the Film School at Full Sail University. He attended high school at Shawnee Mission North High School in Overland Park, and studied film at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida.

Darren Lynn Bousman is most well known for directing most of the Saw movies and are now a well known movie within the horror genre.

During 2004, he was pitching an idea for a movie called The Desperate to various American studios, who complained that the screenplay was too violent, and the plot was too close to Saw. David A. Armstrong who worked on Saw asked Bousman if he could show the script to Saw producer Gregg Hoffman. Hoffman read the script and called Bousman interested in producing "The Desperate", but after showing the script to his partners Mark Burg and Oren Koules, the two decided it would be the perfect opportunity to turn "The Desperate" into Saw II. Two months later, Bousman was flown to Toronto to direct. During the production of Saw II, Bousman directed the music video for Mudvayne's single "Forget to Remember," which appeared as the lead song on the soundtrack album. Saw II was profitable and Bousman was signed on to direct Saw III, which was released on October 27, 2006.

Tobe Hooper:

Tobe Hoopers was born on January 25th, 1943amd is an American film director and screenwriter, best known for his work in the horror film genre. Tobe Hooper began his film career like many people in the field, working on industrial films and TV advertisements. Hooper claims to have come up with the idea for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre while standing in the hardware section of a crowded store. While thinking of a way to get through the crowd, he spotted chainsaws for sale. The highly successful film changed the horror film industry and landed Hooper in Hollywood Using studenst help, Hooper began making fictional films while an instructor at the University of Texas. He exploded onto the public scene in 1974 with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a creepy variation on the unhappy career of cannibalistic killer Ed Gein. Despite its lurid title, the film scored more on the threat of violence than its actual violent content, which was minimal. While critics either condemned the picture or simply refused to review it, the movie became a cult favorite, and within five years of its release it was being written about and analyzed by intellectual film periodicals and is now one of the horror movie classics.

In 1981, Hooper directed the film, The Funhouse. The story involved four teenage friends who decide to spend the night in the funhouse of a sleazy traveling carnival. The film opened to modest box office receipts and received mainly positive reviews. Hooper had a shooting schedule similar in length to Salem's Lot, but nowhere near the same budget. One of the most praised aspects of the film was its visually stylish cinematography.

Prop

This is one of the guns that I am going to use in my film. Obviously it is not a real gun, I have ordered a BB gun, but have to spray it black as for legal purposes they cant sell replicas to the general public only to licensed film companies.I am going to use the gun twice in the film, one to shoot the victim in the first half of the movie and again right.

These are other guns I may use:
